Former President Joe Biden is not only a grandfather but also a great-grandfather! He has several grandchildren, most of whom are girls, with one of his youngest grandsons paying tribute to Joe’s late son.

Over the years, former President Joe Biden Jr.’s grandchildren have spoken about the close bond they share with him. He has also opened up about their relationship, sharing a few details about how they remain connected.

Joe’s Bond with His Grandkids
In 2021, several of Joe’s grandchildren appeared on “TODAY with Jenna & Friends” to talk about their relationship with him. Maisy Biden, one of his granddaughters, revealed that he regularly called them.

Every few days, he would phone a different grandchild to check in. She added that being president never stopped him from attending games or events whenever possible.

During a 2022 interview on the SmartLess podcast, Joe also spoke about the love and connection he shares with his grandchildren. Although he became President of the United States, his grandkids affectionately call him “Pop.”

He confirmed that his powerful position hadn’t changed the family’s closeness, noting they stay in touch almost daily. Speaking of his grandchildren, Joe said his “best recreation” since taking office has been finding moments to connect with his granddaughters.

The politician, who turned 80 that year, shared, “They’re crazy about me and I’m crazy about them. Every single day, I contact every one of my grandchildren.” Now, following his recent medical diagnosis, he may need their support more than ever.

Joe’s Cancer Diagnosis
On May 18, 2025, a statement from Joe’s office revealed that he had been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer that had spread to his bones. As he faces this new health challenge, he is fortunate to have many grandchildren offering love, comfort, and inspiration.

Two days earlier, on May 16, 2025, Joe received his diagnosis after reporting urinary symptoms. Doctors then discovered a “small nodule” on his prostate. According to the statement, the cancer is “characterized by a Gleason score of 9” with “metastasis to the bone.”

The Gleason score is used to describe how prostate cancers look under a microscope, with scores of nine and ten indicating the most aggressive types. Joe’s cancer is classified as Stage 4, meaning it has spread.

The unsigned statement added, “While this represents a more aggressive form of the disease, the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive which [sic] allows for effective management.” The statement also said, “The president and his family are reviewing treatment options with his physicians.”

His grandchildren will undoubtedly be part of the close-knit circle supporting him through this difficult time. Here’s what we know about each one of them today.

Naomi Biden
In January 2025, Joe was preparing to become a great-grandfather. His eldest granddaughter, Naomi Biden, was scheduled for a C-section that month, a joyful update he shared in an interview, exclaiming, “I’m about to be a great-grandfather, Jesus God.”

Naomi, the daughter of Hunter Biden and Kathleen Buhle, is a lawyer. She married attorney Peter Neal in a historic White House ceremony in 2022. The couple lived at the White House and frequently joined Joe and Dr. Jill Biden on trips.

Naomi first revealed her pregnancy on Election Day. She has consistently supported her grandfather, especially after he chose to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Though she typically keeps a low profile, she testified in her father’s federal gun trial last year, where he was convicted.

The former president later pardoned his son in December. In total, Joe has seven grandchildren, with Hunter and the late Beau Biden each having children.

Finnegan Biden
While her older sister Naomi started her family, Finnegan Biden focused on her studies. In March 2020, as the University of Pennsylvania moved to online learning during the COVID-19 pandemic, students encountered mounting academic and personal pressures.

Finnegan, then a rising senior in the College of Arts and Sciences (Class of 2021), led a successful campaign to extend the deadline for electing pass/fail grading. The original deadline of April 13 was widely considered too early.

She launched a petition on Change.org, arguing that students coping with unstable environments, time zone challenges, and health concerns needed more time. The petition garnered over 3,500 signatures and led the university to extend the deadline to April 29, 2020.

Finnegan has long been active in advocacy. She previously led a successful protest that resulted in changes to her high school’s dress code.

At her university, she carefully avoided divisive language in her petition, especially regarding the controversial topic of mandatory pass/fail grading, to maintain unity. She shared the petition through GroupMe and social media, ensuring it reached all class groups.

Though the administration didn’t respond immediately, the eventual policy change reflected the petition’s impact. Reflecting on the campaign, Finnegan expressed pride in the community’s solidarity during such a tumultuous time.

She highlighted the importance of initiative and grassroots activism, saying, “You have to be the change you want to see. Anything as little as just writing a petition. I hope everyone else can realize that it’s not that hard. But you have to do it.”

Her efforts empowered students and fostered unity in a difficult period. In May of that year, Naomi posted two photos of Finnegan, tagged her, and celebrated her accomplishments. She wrote, “BURSTING WITH PRIDE AND PERPETUALLY IN AWE OF MY FIRST LOVE AND LITTLE SIS @finneganbiden ilysmsmsmsm.”

Natalie Biden
During their appearance on “TODAY with Jenna & Friends,” Natalie Biden expressed excitement about seeing what her grandparents would do as President and First Lady of the United States. She was also thrilled that they would be just “a few miles” from her apartment.

Jenna Bush Hager, who lived in the White House during President George W. Bush’s administration, offered some behind-the-scenes insights to the Biden grandchildren.

Jenna mentioned there are “some cool places” upstairs in the White House, including a “secret door.” She said living there was fun and a privilege, then wished the girls well.

Robert “Hunter” Biden II
In 2021, on a Sunday, Joe and Jill attended their grandson Robert “Hunter” Biden II’s confirmation at St. Joseph on the Brandywine in Wilmington, Delaware—a church they regularly attend.

The private family ceremony took place around 1 p.m. The Bidens chatted and posed for photos outside before Jill placed a bouquet at the nearby family burial site. Born in 2006, Robert is the son of the late Beau and Hallie Biden.

Beau, Joe’s eldest son, served as Delaware’s attorney general from 2007 until his death from brain cancer. His service in Iraq with the Army National Guard shaped Joe’s views on military sacrifice.

During a recent visit to Arlington National Cemetery’s Section 60, Joe spoke emotionally about Beau’s service, which influenced his decision not to run for president in 2016.

The event underscored the Biden family’s deep ties to faith and remembrance. Joe has often cited his Catholic faith as a source of strength in times of grief. He mentioned a quote his wife taped to his mirror: “Faith sees best in the dark.”

Beau’s memory has remained a constant presence in Joe’s presidency, symbolized by a photo on the Resolute Desk and his presence at key moments.

Navy Roberts
In November 2019, court documents confirmed that Hunter fathered a child with Lunden Roberts of Arkansas. Despite initially denying it, a DNA test on November 9 established paternity.

Lunden’s attorneys, Jennifer and Clint Lancaster, filed a motion with the results, noting that Hunter wasn’t expected to dispute them. The paternity suit, filed in May 2019 in Independence County, Arkansas, sought child support and health care costs for the child, born in August 2018.

Lunden, who met Hunter while studying in Washington, D.C., filed the case to establish paternity and secure financial support. Her legal team emphasized a desire for privacy and to avoid disrupting Joe’s 2020 campaign.

She said Hunter had admitted paternity in private, though he publicly denied both the relationship and the child. A December 2019 hearing was scheduled, with ongoing settlement talks.

In an interview, Hunter continued to deny the relationship with Lunden. The child, a girl, was named Navy Roberts.

Beau Biden Jr.
In January 2021, it was confirmed that Hunter and his wife, Melissa Cohen, had named their newborn son Beau Biden Jr., honoring the former’s late brother. Transition officials listed “Beau Biden” among those accompanying President-elect Joe from Delaware to Washington, D.C., ahead of his inauguration.

During the January 20 ceremony, Hunter, then 50, was seen holding his baby son, born in late March 2020. Hunter and Melissa married in May 2019. This child is Hunter’s fourth; he shares three daughters with his ex-wife, Kathleen, from whom he divorced in 2017.
