The music icon’s recent health update comes several months after he lost his balance and fell during a live concert. Following the diagnosis, doctors have since urged him to step away from performing.
Billy Joel released a statement on Instagram on May 23, 2025, announcing that he is canceling all upcoming concerts after being diagnosed with Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH).
This condition leads to fluid buildup in or around the brain, disrupting its normal function. It often impacts memory, focus, thinking skills, and movement.
Though the symptoms can seem like dementia, NPH is sometimes reversible. It mostly affects people over 65, and treatment usually involves surgery to insert a shunt that helps drain the extra fluid from the skull.
Since NPH can interfere with movement and coordination, Joel’s medical team advised him to take a break from performing. They noted that recent shows made his condition worse, leading to problems with hearing, vision, and balance.
The music star’s decision to step away from performing wasn’t made lightly. Along with following his doctor’s advice, he expressed deep appreciation for the medical care he’s been receiving and made it clear that taking care of his health is his top priority.
Joel’s message drew a wave of emotion from fans, many of whom shared heartfelt words in the comments. One supporter wrote, “This breaks my heart. Hoping for a fast recovery.” Another said, “We can’t lose you.”
Others joined in with well wishes, writing, “Prayer for a very quick recovery,” and, “Get better soon Billy. Sending prayers your way.”
The messages from fans come after an incident in February 2025, when Joel fell on stage during a concert. A video from that night captured him spinning a microphone stand — moments later, he tossed it aside, lost his balance, and fell.
Before the fall, Joel had already laid out big plans for the months ahead. Earlier that same month, the 76-year-old announced a tour set to begin on March 15, 2025, in Toronto. As part of the schedule, he was expected to perform at all three major sports stadiums in the New York City area — marking the first time any artist would do so in a single summer. These shows were to take place over several weeks.
“I’m looking forward to playing these iconic stadiums this summer — each holds personal significance to me,” Joel said in an interview at the time. “There’s nothing like the energy of the crowds in New York, and sharing a stage with my friends, Rod Stewart, Sting and Stevie Nicks, whose music always inspires me, is extremely rewarding.”
Joel’s excitement for the summer stadium shows came not long after closing a major chapter in his career. In July of the previous year, he wrapped up a ten-year residency at New York’s Madison Square Garden, where he performed monthly for a decade.
According to Billboard Boxscore, the run brought in $266.7 million and drew 1.9 million attendees across 104 concerts. He missed only two scheduled months — June 2017 and December 2022 — and paused for about a year and a half during the peak of the COVID-19 pandemic.
But as the new tour approached, circumstances shifted when Joel shared a health-related update just days before the first show. On March 11, 2025, he posted on Instagram that all upcoming concerts would be pushed back due to a medical issue.
The tour was postponed for four months to allow time for recovery from surgery and to continue physical therapy with his medical team. The New York native is expected to fully recover, with the tour set to restart at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh on July 5, 2025. He penned:
“While I regret postponing any shows, my health must come first. I look forward to getting back on stage and sharing the joy of live music with our amazing fans. Thank you for your understanding.”
Initially, reports revealed that Joel’s 16-show tour would conclude on November 1, 2025 at Hard Rock Live in Hollywood, Florida. While the schedule focused mostly on North American cities, it also included two dates in the United Kingdom — Edinburgh on June 7 and Liverpool on June 21.
Billy Joel’s recent health struggles have led him to pause his long-anticipated tour, following a fall and a serious medical diagnosis. His doctors have advised rest and treatment, making it necessary to step back from the stage for now.
Despite the changes, he has shown deep appreciation for the support from fans and remains hopeful about returning. As he focuses on recovery, the music legend’s connection to his audience remains as strong as ever.
